TANZANIA, UAE INK DEAL TO PUSH ENVIRONMENT CONSERVATION AGENDA

 THE government of Tanzania has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Arab Emirates (UAE)  to join forces under Article 6 for nature-based climate solutions to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Through Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS), Tanzania has inked a deal with UAE-based entity Blue Carbon LCC to collaborate on promoting sustainable forest management practices and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 

 

The deal makes a new move and historical moment on the pioneering environment conservation agenda between Tanzania and UAE under the Blue Carbon Project.


Speaking during the signing ceremony on 06/02/2023 that was also witnessed by the founder and chairman of Blue Carbon LCC a member of the Dubai Royal Family  Sheikh Ahmed Dalmook Al Maktoum and his delegation, the Minister of State, Vice president’s office Sulemani Jafo said that the milestone opening the new epoch in environment conversation.


This is the opening of a new chapter of the blue and green economy which integrates the three pillars of economic growth, social welfare, and environmental sustainability.

 

The Minister noted that Tanzania is the best and right place for carbon projects because there are more than 48.1 million hectares of forests that provide global services for carbon sequestration.

“It is our expectation, this carbon project will contribute to achieving the Nationally Determined Contributions (ndcs) for our nation, which is targeted to reduce 30-35% of GHG emissions by 2030.” He reverberated.

 

Mr Jafo added that the project is estimated to be up to 8 million hectares of mangrove and terrestrial plants. The project is the first eye-opener under the established National Carbon Trading Regulations of October 2022 and the Guidelines on Management and Control of Carbon Trading in Tanzania

Minister Jafo expressed that the project is the best way forward for sustainable economic development that emphasizes the environmental conservation agenda

What is happening today is just a huge effort done by our President Her Excellency Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan on international diplomacy, It’s her creativity and willingness toward the global agenda of climate change

 Noted Mr Jafo.

 

On her side, the Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism Dr Pindi Chana expressed that the projects from the credit initiatives will provide direct incentives and foster forest protection and sustainable management.


 
“In that context, the ministry will keep advocating and collaborating with all stakeholders to enhance conservation efforts aimed to mitigate the effect of climate change.” She added.

 


Commenting on the instance, Sheikh Ahmed Dalmook Al Maktoum expressed that the collaboration represents an important step towards promoting sustainable forest management practices and fighting climate change.

Blue Carbon LCC is a Dubai-based company formed to create environmental assets and nature-based solutions and register carbon removal projects under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

 

The company serves as an enabler of blue and green economy operational frameworks, which deploys nature-based solutions in the context of de-carbonization using the latest technology and green economy principles.
